Barb Quelch

Writer

Barbara enjoys being a member of SWAN with its bright business women who are open, friendly, sharing, and learning from one another’s work and life journey.

She serves three groups of clients: she writes website content for small businesses; resumes, LinkedIn profiles and bios for executives in career transition; and job postings, position profiles and other collateral materials for companies hoping to attract outstanding employees. She brings to this diverse group of clients her skills as a writer and communications professional.

Barbara’s background includes over a decade working with one of the city’s top executive search firms, following an earlier successful career in public relations. She is now using this blend of experience to help people in transition looking for careers that fit their purpose and passion.

She has combined her love of helping people to be successful with her love of writing to help entrepreneurs avoid pitfalls in the marketplace by clarifying in writing what they are good at, what they are offering, and differentiating their product or service.

Barbara maintains her focus in work through self-discipline, having a clear vision of what is important, and setting well defined boundaries between her professional and personal activities. Her passion in life is her family and giving back to her community.

Barbara is training for the 2014 Ride to Conquer Cancer and is a member of Team Finn—a local group dedicated to raising funds for pediatric cancer research. Support her or your favourite participant by going to conquercancer.ca.

Elizabeth Shewchuk

Daughter for a Day Seniors Care

Elizabeth was inspired to start Daughter for a Day Seniors Care after experiencing first-hand the challenges and issues that adult children are facing as their parents are aging. She founded Daughter for A Day Seniors Care because she saw a need for a service that (1) provides adult children with respite care and help when needed, and (2) provides quality care and companionship for seniors who wish to continue living in their own homes safely and with dignity. She believes that it all starts with simple companionship, and her business provides a variety of services—from companionship, home care, and personal care to caregiver respite. As the seniors’ and families’ needs grow, the services also evolve.

Because she’s always been involved with family businesses, starting her current business seemed like a natural thing for her to do. Since starting her business, Elizabeth has engaged in ongoing professional development in the field of senior care. Her greatest career related achievement was becoming a Certified Professional Consultant on Aging and a Certified Dementia Practitioner.

One of the best pieces of business advice Elizabeth received was to surround herself with a team of people she could call on for advice or feedback. Her advice to new entrepreneurs includes doing your market research and figuring out how to differentiate yourself from others in the same sector. She would also warn others against getting so caught up in the business that it’s the only thing you’re doing.

Elizabeth is passionate about spending time with her five grandchildren. She has several interests, including reading, hiking, and social media. As an avid networker, Elizabeth was thrilled when she found out about SWAN four years ago. Not only has she made some good friends through SWAN, but she also got her first client through a SWAN member.
